Artistic Elements

Our involvement in the art world has introduced an exciting realm of creativity, along with the challenge of turning ambitious design concepts into reality. We have worked alongside numerous locally and internationally renowned artists, in providing engineering solutions to creating their art pieces. Many of these are on display in and around Cape Town and beyond, with some being sold in the international market.

Notable examples of these include:

• “The Citizen” – bronze sculpture by Cape Town-based artist Brett Murray. This sculpture was commissioned by Spier Arts Academy and represents the power of the individual within a collective. Measuring 7.5m tall and with a weight of 3 ton, collaboration was required between the artist, the structural engineer Karl Hvidsten of Tank Industries, Bronze Age and our fabrication team. “The Citizen” was transported and assembled at Staines City.
• ”Vertical Aerial – Johannesburg” – a contemporary style freestanding Mosaic artwork by artist Gerhard Marx, commissioned by Spier Architectural Arts. In collaboration with structural engineer, Karl Hvidsten from Tank Industries, we manufactured a 3m high and 5m wide rectangular steel structure at a compound angle for this piece to rest on. We transported this to Johannesburg and commissioned the artwork for the FNB Art Fair.
• “GREEN” a solo exhibition by the late Barend De Wet at Smac Art Gallery. We manufactured a set of stainless steel knitting needles, standing 3m high on a counterbalancing steel base.

Our peripheral contributions to various artists and galleries extends to the manufacture and installation of sculpture bases and plinths, framework, painting stacking racks, adaptation and modification to large easels, as well as the manufacture of steel props for the film industry.
